Many a late night, I can be found at my desk in "Hey-Girl" Hayes as I struggle to finish whatever assignment I put off until midnight/put off until my food is done cooking in Café World on Facebook. As I am sure many do while burning the midnight oil, I often have music playing as a background to the cacophony of my own thoughts.

Eastern's 2008 security report, released in October, shows drug- and alcohol-related offenses on campus are on the rise. While this may come as a surprising increase to some, there are reasons the campus community should be happy with the report's findings, namely in the area of campus safety.

Currently, there is a movement on campus-under supervision of the student-created group Students for a Living Wage-to increase the wages of all ISU employees.
Also recently, their proposal to increase these wages to $19.51 was decried by Diann McKee, the vice president of finance here at ISU, saying this increase would cost $12 million for full-time employees, which would either cause budget cuts or require the university to increase revenue in some fashion.

Campus security should take a hint from the weather and chill out as winter approaches.
Security employees have cracked down on parking lot restrictions in preparation for the approaching season. According to Director of Campus Security Mike Wertz, as non-student lots become partially covered with snow, fewer spaces will be available for faculty and staff who the lots are reserved for.

Yes Jancy Nightingale This past week's CCA, Traditionalism and Modernism in Art and Architecture, received mixed reviews. Some criticisms could apply to any CCA, whether referring to technical difficulties, a speaker's monotone delivery or going over time.

Last week, the Chimes disappointed many readers when they saw that there was no "Stay Classy, Capital" column. I heard a multitude of reasons for why there wasn't an article. Everything from "he was fired" to "he wasn't allowed to write because of Family Weekend.

Few things in life are legitimately shocking enough to make one's jaw drop.
Getting slapped is probably one of them. Watching someone get hit by a bus is probably another.
I hope everyone can count the number of times they've seen either of those things happen on just one hand, but most people have jaw-dropping reactions to a lot of things.

Last Saturday I took some time to visit my "happy place." Everyone has one. That place in the world you can escape to and everything seems right, even if it's just for a few minutes.
When I arrived, I took deep breaths, filling my lungs with the aromatic scent that hung in the air.

I remember the good ole days when you had to have a college e-mail address to sign up for Facebook.
I remember the day I discovered it.
"My god," I thought. "I have this great site here where I can share my feelings, stories, pictures and thoughts without being bound by the chains of shame, guilt and judgment because the only people who will see this are college students like me.

Thanksgiving break is less than five days away and I couldn't be more excited. Not because it's the first time I'll be home since school started, or because I can catch up on sleep or even because of the pecan pie, but because of the traditions. This Friday when everyone is packing up their cars to go home, I'll be taking the train down to Carbondale and driving another hour to the southernmost tip of Illinois to take part in a Steele family tradition: Deer season.

Country superstar Tim McGraw has just released his tenth studio album, "Southern Voice," and it seems fans couldn't be more thrilled. After waiting more than two years for a new album, there are now twelve new songs for fans to enjoy.
McGraw decided to take on more serious material for his latest album and tackles a lot of subjects he has avoided in the past, including getting older and facing his own mortality, in songs such as "If I Died Today" and "Forever Seventeen.

It's a wonderful time to be a senior. The economy has gone to crap, though they say it's slowly and not-so-surely on the rise. Finding a job is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, let alone securing one; I'm reverting to looking for mere internships just in case all my time spent job searching falls flat on its face.

Along with the tradition of great Michigan Men comes the tradition of Michigan football fans bitching and bailing when the team doesn't have a perfect game or a perfect season. With the most winningest football program in the country, we have a long-standing tradition of being a football school, expected to win by fans and foes alike.

D-Day. A huge concert in the fall, meant to bring our little campus together for one night of fun.
This is how it's supposed to be, but it's never been that easy. The student body is never pleased by whatever band is playing, and besides, how can one band possibly unite the entire campus?
This year, more problems have played into the concert's postponement until next semester, breaking our yearly fall tradition.

Miami University women participating in sorority recruitment in January 2010 will be introduced to Greek life differently this year. The clapping, cheering and singing will still resound through Central quad, but there will be no hand shaking when women enter chapter suites.

Contrary to popular belief, hookah bars are not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking. In fact, hookah smoking poses just as much risk (if not more) to the health of the smoker as well as those in the same vicinity. Many advocates of hookah smoking will tell you that there is no tar in hookah smoke; they will also tell you that there is less nicotine.

Rich Rodriguez has been one of the most controversial Michigan coaches in recent memory, and the team's abysmal record has inspired many current students, alumni and fans to call for his firing. While I agree that his firing would probably drive off a good deal of the two years of recruits he has now and the ones being scouted now, I think that he has done no favors for Michigan.

Last Wednesday, many ISU students walked to class, typed papers and griped about their professors' ineptitude without realizing there was anything different about the day.
Since 1919, Americans have celebrated Veterans Day (then called Armistice Day) on Nov.

I am a parent of a Capital student. I was visiting on campus with my brother this past weekend to enjoy the Capital campus and surrounding community. Our overall visit was quite pleasant, and the campus was well-presented. However, I made the mistake of once again reading Capital's student newspaper, the Chimes.
