Delta Upsilon helps animal shelter facility

Members of the Pi Beta Phi sorority were the first to participate in "DU Dog Days," a new philanthropy project conducted by the Delta Upsilon fraternity.
The Pi Phi girls met members of Delta Upsilon Nov. 7 at the Animal Adoption Center in Hamilton, Ohio and spent the day volunteering with homeless dogs.
Upon their arrival, the group was given an orientation of the Adoption Center facilities. The group was then given the opportunity to take orphaned dogs out of their cages and walk them around the center. After about an hour, the dogs were returned to their cages, and the DU and Pi Phi group left the facility.
Sean Byrne, Delta Upsilon's philanthropy chair and organizer of the event, was more than pleased with the outcome.
"People seemed really excited to do it, and the turnout was great," he said.
According Byrne, the DU and Pi Phi group, which numbered almost 50, was the largest to ever come and volunteer with the dogs.
"The Animal Adoption Center was actually overwhelmed by the size of our group," said Rachel Vertuca, a Pi Phi member who participated in the event.
The first DU Dog Days event has received a good deal of positive feedback.
"I think the event was a great idea," said Kyle Baldwin, a Delta Upsilon member who participated. "Everyone there had a fantastic time, and I feel like we helped the Adoption Center a lot. I liked being able to get directly involved in the community, instead of just collecting money."
Byrne said he saw the dog-walking event as a great success.
"This is a different kind of philanthropy event, in the sense that we aren't just raising money to support a cause," he said. "We actually went to the Adoption Center and got involved with the community by providing volunteer service."
Building upon the initial success, DU plans to coordinate more Dog Days with other sororities in the future.
According to Byrne, the fraternity also hopes to set up an on-campus philanthropy to raise money for the Hamilton Animal Adoption Center.
Vertuca said Pi Beta Phi would continue to work with DU at the shelter on an on-going basis.
"Pi Phi is thrilled to partner up with DU for such a rewarding project," she said. "We cannot wait for another enjoyable day at the shelter."
Other sororities can participate in a DU Dog Days event at any time. Any sorority group interested can contact Byrne at the Delta Upsilon fraternity house. Groups can also contact the Animal Adoption Center of Hamilton for information.
