Personal pet peeves at Goggin

You know what really grinds my gears, if I may take a line from Peter Griffin.

While I think that the confines of new Goggin Ice Center make it one of the top places in the country to watch or play college hockey, with its second full season almost complete, there are some things that really bug me about the way Goggin is run.

The biggest problem I see with Goggin is the seating in the student section. It's small-maybe a bit too small. Athletic Director Brad Bates explained the section was designed based on historical numbers and future inflation of students attending ice hockey games.

"We would have 2,000 students for an Ohio State game, but only 900 for other games," Bates said.

With Miami hockey continuing to grow in popularity, the student section will be reevaluated by the Athletic Department after this season, Bates said. If RedHawk fans continue to pack the arena, who knows what kind of changes will be made to the student section in years to come.

While the student section is a problem that will have to wait until after the 2007-08 season, there are two smaller problems which I would like to see fixed before the University of Michigan Wolverines visit Feb. 8-9.

I think it's a great idea that the arena has started to play movies and TV shows while students wait the agonizing 90 minutes for the game to start.

But why Madagascar?

Director of Athletic Marketing Anthony Azama said that the choosing Madagascar for the last home game was just the first attempt at showing movies and TV shows to students while they wait. Azama actually set up a focus group of students and they recommended Madagascar.

But here we are in Steve Cady Arena, surrounded by ice getting ready for a hockey game, and we are forced to watch a lion, giraffe, hippo and zebra escape from the Central Park Zoo. Next time how about a more stirring tale of the drunk lawyer forced to be a hockey coach and take a raggity bunch of kids and turn them into all-star hockey players to take on Iceland to win the Junior Goodwill Games? There are three Mighty Ducks movies, plenty of material to keep the students' attention. After talking with Azama, there just might be a Charlie Conway and Gordon Bombay sighting before the Michigan series.
