Study up future Miami Mergers: It's game time.
In honor of Valentine's Day, at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Shriver Center Heritage Room, Program Board will be hosting RedHawk Romance-a dating show based on the Newlywed Game, where couples will compete to see who knows the most about their partner.
"We're really excited to put this on, because it's never been done by Program Board, and I don't think that it has been done at Miami, or at least not for a long time," said Sandy Li, committee co-chair.
Program Board had been toying with the idea of dating game for more than a year, but the biggest problem was deciding how and when they would do it, according to Li.
"There are so many different ways to do a dating show," Li said. "We considered putting people behind a screen like Singled Out, but finally decided that the Newlywed Game was a better option for Valentine's Day."
Eleven couples have applied so far and Program Board is expecting more because people can apply up to the day of the event.
"I was a little nervous at first, because you never know if people are going to want to participate," said Kate Croft, co-chair for the event. "But we have had a great response so far, and I think it's going to be a really fun event."
The applications contain basic contact information, as well as questions about the couple so that Program Board can get an idea of the couple's relationship and taper their questions to it. Not everyone who applies will be able to participate because there are only a limited number of slots. Program Board has advertised through posters, Facebook.com, sorority visits and letters sent to student organizations.
According to Croft, a random drawing will most likely take place before the event to decide which couples will compete.
The winning couple will receive an $80 gift certificate to Alexander House and a reservation for Valentine's Day.
Although participants are limited to couples, singles can still enjoy RedHawk Romance. "We're trying not to make it exclusive to couples," Li said. "We're giving out lots of door prizes like DVDs and movie tickets, which everyone can enjoy."
Applications can be found at www.programboard.org or in the Program Board office, located in 356 Shriver Center.
