Superfan Week to feature Miami Madness

RedHawk spirit will be in full throttle next week, with the second annual Miami Madness and Superfan Week's athletic challenges and prizes.
According to Brian Grigsby, one of the event's coordinators, Miami Madness is an event that will give students the opportunity to participate in challenging activities with Miami athletes.
The creators of the event see this as an attempt to help unify the student-athletes with other students and create a competitive and enjoyable atmosphere.
The event starts at 7:30 p.m. Monday and will be a comprehensive bonanza filled with different athletic activities such as a 3-point competition, slam-dunk contest and half court shot.
Grigsby said Miami Madness will involve several student organizations and businesses around Oxford to broaden its reach.
The slam-dunk competition will be an interactive event in which people who e-mail miamiredalert@yahoo.com will get a chance to participate and potentially win the prize of free buffalo wings for a year at Buffalo Wild Wings.
For the half-court shot event, fans will need to make a half court shot to win free books from DuBois for a semester.
Fans need to wear Miami apparel to participate in any event including the half-court shot and slam-dunk competition. Grigsby said the event will involve several sports, compared to the 2007 March Madness which featured winter sports.
"This year we plan on getting every sport more involved," Grigsby said. "I think that incorporating more teams will make it more enjoyable for everyone. Ultimately we want to get people excited about Miami and the sports seasons in general, we feel like this year's event should really accomplish what last year's did but even more so."
While the event incorporates many Miami sports, it takes place just two nights before the RedHawks open their men's basketball season. Assistant coach Ryan Pedon hopes it will generate unprecedented excitement around the team.
"The No. 1 thing we need to do is get our students more involved than ever," Pedon said. "That is a major priority for our basketball program. We want the student body to be excited to watch this team as it is undoubtedly the most exciting team we have had in a long time."
