After abusing the mesh Thursday for eight scores against Ball State University, the Miami University RedHawk soccer team looked forward to facing the University of Akron Zips in the MAC tournament. The Red and White defense came up strong once again and advanced to the MAC semifinals with a 2-0 victory over the No. 3 seeded Zips Sunday.
"I thought we played really well," Head Coach Bobby Kramig said. "We came out strong and the first half was arguably the best half of soccer we've played this year. I was very pleased with our start, and I thought we were very unfortunate not to get a goal in the first half. I told the girls that it was a good half of soccer but it was still 0-0, you've got to do better and finish this off."
Coach Kramig's crew came out inspired when junior Sara Lund tricked the Zips keeper just 43 seconds into the half and treated her 'Hawks to a 1-0 advantage. Lund's goal was her seventh this season and came off an assist from senior Kersta Carlson.
"Things are clicking for us right now," Kramig said. "I don't know, maybe we're clicking at the right time."
The Red and White sensed blood and the Zips did
everything they could to hold off three rips from Miami senior Jodi Zwingelberg. But it was Zwingelberg's teammate Stephanie Laser who gave the RedHawks some insurance when she put skull to ball off of a free kick from the boot of Allison Berkey making the score 2-0.
"Its really exciting because it's the first time we've been to the semis since my freshman year," Laser said. "We haven't had a lot of good seasons until now and we're breaking all the records, beating all the teams we haven't beaten since 2005-06 and the win against Akron was definitely awesome because we lost to them the last time. It felt good to play great."
The RedHawk defense was solid again with Krista Pace keeping it clean between the pipes for her third consecutive shutout. By blanking the Zips, Pace also set a new mark for shutouts in a season with eight this year.
Kramig's team appears to be off of pre-heat mode now, coming off three straight victories and will try to stay hot against the Eastern Michigan University Eagles Friday. The contest will kickoff at 2 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich.
"We just need to stay focused and stay on task," Kramig said. "Keep doing the good things that we're doing and stay on task and we'll get a good result against Eastern. Its pretty much just strictly up to us."
